Why I made it
A new kitchen at our cottage called for new seating. Chairs of all kinds were waiting in the barn; a bit of sanding and white paint did the rest. Only the cushions were missing, and since every chair was one of a kind, each needed its own. The bentwood chair is a different case: its hand-woven cane seat has some give, so the cushion isn't there for comfort. Mainly it protects the cane, so the handwork lasts a few more generations. And so the two look good together.
What I learned
For an unusually shaped chair, tracing the shape is the quickest way. With a pile of round chairs, though, there's no point tracing each one, and that's how the formula came about.
